Biography of Ms.Ivyline Fleming


Ms. Ivyline Fleming was born in the Parish of Manchester, Jamaica, West Indies. In 1957 she immigrated to Canada and became a Canadian Citizen in 1962. Her work experience is quite diversified and includes working as a Nanny, Caterer and Nurse’s Aid. She successfully completed courses in Catering.

In 1959, Ms. Fleming became a member of the Negro Citizenship Association, an organization which did pioneering work to establish the rights of all Canadians in housing and employment where she served as a Member of the Board of Directors and Entertainment Chairperson.

In 1962, she joined the Jamaica Association of Montreal Inc. where she served as Entertainment Chairperson, Member of the Board of Directors, 1st and 2nd Vice-President and President for two years. She served the Jamaica Association of Montreal with dedication and dignity for over 40 years.

In 1963, she founded the Women’s Auxiliary of the Jamaica Association of Montreal and served as its Chairperson.

In 1996, she took her organizational and creative skills to another level when she launched the Jamaica Association of Montreal Inc. Community Women’s League of Montreal, now known as the Jamaican Canadian Community Women’s League of Montreal Inc., receiving their Federal Charter in July 2001.


Ms. Fleming has received a number of special recognitions and awards for her hard work and dedication to the community. Among them are:

1983-1984: The Jamaica Association of Montreal, Service Award in recognition of her services to the Association, as well as Plague from the Jamaica Association of Montreal Inc. for her contribution to the Association.

1990: “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Jamaica Association of Montreal Inc. in recognition of 28 years of service, the “Jackie Robinson Award” from Montreal Association of Black Business Persons and Professionals.

1992: The Governor General’s Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.

1994: The Jamaica Association of Montreal Inc. Award for outstanding contribution to the association and the community.

1999: The Honorary Consul of Montreal Plague for Jamaica’s 37th year of independence and for dedication and outstanding service to community work.

2000: Certificate of Recognition from the Round Table of Black History Month for her dedication to community work.

2002: The Queens Golden Jubilee Medal on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the accession to community work.

2003: Medal of Appreciation from the Prime Minister of Jamaica in recognition of her many services to Jamaicans residing in Canada.

2006: Medal from the Provincial Government for services to the community.
